Expanding our green city development

Florence is currently recognized as a Tree City and Bee City.  Councilwoman Myers Ervin will capitalized on being a Tree City and Bee City in so many other areas  such as expanding green initiatives Florence already has, as well as exploring others that would make our city clean, conscious, and ultimately sustainable.  She has the foresight and pathway to attract those industries who also believe in sustainability, while having our citizens be ultimately a healthier, thoughtful workforce.

What does this look like immediately?

Expanding green initiatives will ultimately improve the health and wellness of Florence citizens, which will give us a clean and safe environment and a strong workforce.   For Councilwoman Myers Ervin, it starts by:

  • Creating a Walkable City - Having a more walkable city will make way for citizens to be more active in their lives, whether that is taking a leisurely stroll, a destination walk, or a power walk.Having beautiful sites, as well as all your needs within walking distance not only encourages citizens to stay healthy, but it also encourages people interactions.Front Porch concept, which is always been a staple in Southern living. Our citizens want our needs within walking distance to encourage a city-wide community.Building opportunities for sustainable neighborhoods.
  • Developing More Greenspaces – Florence is already a Tree City.  Councilwoman Teresa Myers Ervin wants to expand that to plant more trees and have more greenspaces that would attract nature for people to enjoy the outdoors. Urban areas are normally deprived of green areas that can be used to clean the air naturally and promote wellness. This once again fosters a physically active population.
  • Cost Effective Recycling – The city once had a recycling program and it went away for whatever reason.Councilwoman Teresa Myers Ervin wants to look into implementing a cost-effective way to have a recycling program. She wants to look at a possible CO-OP that might have citizen ownership with the dividend being an environmentally sustainable community for the future.
  • Renewable Energy - Tap into using more solar energy in the community; in addition, training a workforce in solar energy to attract companies that provide jobs in specifically solar renewable energy to service other areas around the state and nation.
